Maybe you’re not ready to leave your full-time job. Maybe you’re working from home caring for small humans. Maybe you like the security of a regular pay cheque. Maybe you’ve tried to make a go of full-time freelance writing, but it didn’t work. Whatever your situation, there’s a way to make part-time freelancing sustainable and fulfilling.
It’s probably not going to come as a big surprise to you that one of the best ways that freelance writers can secure a writing gig or new client is through having a range of amazing testimonials. Now, I don’t know about you, but for a long time I neglected gathering testimonials from editors and clients.
While I know many people were happy to see the back of 2020, I’m not sure this year has been the unburdened, fresh start that we all hoped for. I know that sounds like a downer, but I think it’s important to recognise that the world is still topsy turvy.

When I was a social worker, so much of my work was rooted in anti-oppressive practices. And let me tell you, I made mistakes all the time. But I think the key is to keep learning, asking questions, accepting that we’re not going to get it right 100% of the time and use resources (like the toolkit mentioned below) that help us become anti-oppressive freelance writers.
Even though I’m pretty organised, I’m not someone who likes to do a huge amount of forward planning.
The problem with this is that it means I have items on my ‘to do’ list that inevitably get put to the bottom because they’re not urgent.
