I always used to wonder how travel writers got their sweet gigs. After all, from where I sat, it looked like someone was flying writers to amazing destinations, paying their expenses and wining and dining them. I wanted in, but I had no idea how to become a travel writer. In truth, I had no idea how to get invited on a press trip.
Oh how I love blogs written by, and for, freelance writers. These blogs are so good that I almost can’t believe they are giving away their content and wisdom for free.
My first famil (often called “familiarisation trips” or “fam trips” where a tourism body or PR company ‘host’ you) happened almost as an accident. I had written for a food magazine about the town in which I live and once the editor said she was happy with the piece, I asked if she was looking for more pitches or whether she had other locations she needed to cover.
